Barry M - Gelly Nails

First Impressions
Barry M have changed their bottle top to a shiny metal to emphasise that this is their 'Hi-Shine' range. It does help to find them in you collection as they are the only polishes with this shiny top.
I only have two colours from there range but I will defiantly go and buy some more, I own 'pomegranate' a beautiful deep pinky red and 'Papaya' a peachy pinky orange.

Application
'Pomegranete' is a one coat application - perfect <3. However 'Papaya' needs two coats. Oh well, at least the second coat makes the polish look thick. These polishes are particularly useful if you are in a rush as they are 'extra shiney' so there is no need for a top coat!

Looks and Durability
I love both of these colours as they look great on their own, especially 'papaya' which people seemed to love :) . They last for an average time, about a week or so.

Verdict - 5/5 stars
Yup, they are at the top of my ranking! Any polish that only needs one coat is pretty much a 5 star polish in my opinion! (even though 'Papaya' needed two, it earned the 5 star with its looks) I recommend that you pick one up if you come across them at a cosmetic store because at only £3.99, they are easily affordable and will make your nails look great!

Polish of The Month - Ombre Dots

I thought I would do a little review/tutorial on my favourite nail polish of this month, although I'm not too keen on the name "Polish of The Month"....not very catchy - if you think of anything better post it as a comment :)

I think 'Ombre Dots' deserves the award this month as it looks fantastic and has attracted quite a lot of attention!

One of the reasons it works so well is because it is very, very simple. It is simple because I hardly had any time do paint my nails, 30 minutes in fact! Simple designs work well because people don't have to look for a long time to work out what is on your nails (lets face it, they will only get a glance if you are walking past them - probably longer if you are pointing at something) but when they do get a look and like what they see, chances are they will compliment you - or in the case of a stranger just mentally compliment you.

For the review of the nail polishes just scroll to the bottom!

Ombre Dots Tutorial

  Equipment
  • Base Coat
  • Light blue Polish
  • Dark Blue Polish
  • Top coat
  • Dotting tool
  • Tape

Step 1 - Clean your nails and apply a base coat, then paint them a light blue.

Step 2 - You might want to put some tape around the base of your nail. Using a dotting tool, dip it into a dark blue colour and make a dotted line at the base of your nail, this line should be fairly thick.

Step 3 - Start adding individual dots from the line to about halfway up your finger nail, they should get further and further apart the closer they get to the tip - exaggerate the distance between each dot to make it fade out better

Step 4 - Add a top coat, but for an extra professional look - add a matte top coat.

Ciate/Avon Review

First Impressions
These bottles look very pretty, with a little bow as a finishing touch, the colours I am using are 'Superficial' and 'Pepperminty'. The dotting tool also looks very sleek and professional.

Application
The paint is a very thin, gloupy mixture that needs at least two coats. Unfortunately, the paint doesn't dry very quickly, so if you have a thick layer you will have to wait about 5 minutes for it to be touch-dry. At least the colour matches what it is in the bottle.
The Avon dotting tool is a breeze! I found it is easier to put a bit of the nail polish into a painting palette so the dotting tool can pick up the colour better.

Looks and Durability
Luckily the polish turns out alright after the tricky application, the light blue give the manicure a summery vibe and the dark blue dots adds lots of contrast.
It will last for about the week, longer if you are careful.

Verdict - (Ciate) 3/5 stars  (Avon) 5/5 stars
The consistency of the nail polish really let it down - I could just use a different (and cheaper - £9 for this nail polish is a rip off!) brand and get the same result in half the time!
It doesn't deserve any lower than 3 because it does have a nice bottle and they do turn out ok.
On the other hand, the Avon dotting tool is brilliant! I love the fact that you can achieve a range of designs using just one tool, the price is also a bonus at just $1.99 or £1.32!

Strawberry Swirl Tutorial

Sometimes you just have to paint your nails pink
and cover them with swirls...

      Base           Pink Nail          Nail           Top
  Coat             Polish         Art Pen         Coat
 Equipment
  • Base Coat
  • Pastel Pink Nail Polish
  • Top Coat
  • White Nail Art Pen

Step 1
Use a base coat to protect your nails from dis-colouration and to smooth the surface (which will help the polish stick better).

Step 2
Paint the nails pink, this may require 2 coats.

Step 3
After the main coat has completly dried, take the nail pen and start to draw a big curved line on one side of your nail from the base to the tip.

Then draw smaller curves coming off the main line, try to vary the curliness of the lines for greater effect.

Once you are happy with the swirl design,
add a little dot at the ends of the lines.

Step 4
Make sure you seal you new design with a top coat!

Barry M - Strawberry Icecream

This review is by request of bethdoesbeautystuff

First Impressions
Pink. Well a sort of pastely pink, I thought it looked a lot peachier on the Barry M website.

In the picture I had a pattern on my nails (see the tutorial 'Strawberry Swirls' for how to do this) but if you look closely at the pink underneath you can see that it looks just a tad darker than what it is in the bottle.

Application
The brush is a good size for all nails, not too big for my pinkie and not too small for my thumb.
It also dries very quickly leaving your hands looking sweet, summery and well manicured.
Be warned, although it may look nice this polish will need at least 2 coats for a even coverage!
Add extra shine with a top coat or make it matt with a matt top coat.

Looks and durability
Perfect pink for a light summery look, it will go with most outfits and can be partnered with another pastel colour, such as yellow or blue. It is light enough to not be 'full on pink' a look, which I am not too keen on...

Like most Barry M nail paints I have tried (with the exception of their 'Textured' Range) Strawberry Icecream will last you for at least a weak before starting to chip.

Verdict - 4/5 stars
This is a good all-round nail polish, it will go with almost any outfit and there is no fussing around trying to clean your nails up after the application. There is one small problem - it is too thin! I would love to give Strawberry Icecream 5/5 but that final star is lost to the double coat application. :(

You can buy 'Strawberry Icecream' online at www.barrym.com or from most cosmetic stores.

Barry M - Textured Nail Effects

I am a big fan of Barry M - so when I saw that they had a new nail polish range out I couldn't stop my self from buying one of their new Textured Nail Paints.

First Impressions
I love the colours AND the names Barry M gave them:
  • Atlantic Road (pastel blue)
  • Kingsland Road (pastel pink)
  • Ridley Road (pastel green)
  • Station Road (pastel yellow)
It makes them seem all nice and summery :)

Application
The paint is very thin so I recommend about 2 coats for a strong colour, the good news is that they dry very quickly so the waiting time between coats is minimal.

There is no need for a top coat as that would defeat the point of the texture.

Looks and Durability
From right to left: Kingsland Road;
Atlantic Road; Ridley Road; Station Road
To be honest, the finished look makes it seem that there are lots of tiny air bubbles trapped in the polish, or that you dropped the brush of the floor so that bits of dust stuck on and was painted on your nails.

Although they do look quite nice from a distance, they have a sort of matted appearence.

Being textured the polish will get caught on more objects than normal, and although it drys quite hard, and I found that it would get 'worn down' within a fortnight. The finish will vary as I play the guitar alot which means that the nail polish will be worn away quicker than most people. I suspect that if you are careful/don't do many activitys that require fingernails you could get about 3 weeks out of them (although you will have proberly changed them by then :p).

Verdict - 3/5 stars
Although I love the idea of a textured nail polish and the colours Barry M have produced are extreemly pretty, the appearance lets them down as it looks like a bad manicure close up. Furthermore they don't last very long on your nails which seems a shame as they spice up even the dullest outfit.

However, as they are only £3.99 each, if you are looking for a new/quick application nail polish I recomend you pick one up as they are fun to apply and have a nice feel!
